between these pathways. To do so we need to observe the activity of the direct and indirect pathway spiny projection neurons in “behaving” animal models (1). However, it is difficult to distinguish direct and indirect spiny projection neuron firing using electrophysiological recordings and antidromic stimulation is unreliable and difficult due to “cross talk” between axons of both pathways (1). The authors highlight that optogenetic technology in vivo facilitates the identification of specific cell types and the monitoring of activity of specific cell types (1). Limitations of this technology include the requirement for head restraint, which limits the study of structures involved in movement and the technology does not penetrate to subcortical structures therein limiting the ability to study the basal ganglia (1). Cui et al. developed an experimental paradigm utilizing in vivo photometry to optically record neural activity within the striatum during free movement in a mouse model (1). They implanted a fiber-optic probe to deliver laser pulses and record emitted photons in the dorsal striatum over time. The optical indicator was a genetically encoded calcium indicator (GECI), selectively expressed in the direct pathway spiny projection neurons by injection with a recombinant viral vector to produce D1-Cre mice (2). A similar technique was used to selectively express the indicator in the indirect pathway spiny projection neurons of A2A-Cre mice (1). Focusing specifically on their examination of the relationship between activity in the direct and indirect pathway spiny projection neurons during movement, the authors measured fluorescence whilst mice performed a lever-pressing task. They demonstrated time-locked increases in fluorescence during the initiation of the task with a similar temporal profile in both the direct A commentary on

P29: The Effect of Stress and Anxiety During Pregnancy

Stress is a word that can be used to explain the way we feel, or it can be used to describe something that happens to someone. For most pregnant woman, pregnancy is a happy and breathtaking time, however, pregnant for some woman can be a source of stress, depression and anxiety. These factors can be risk factors for adverse outcomes for mothers and children. Anxiety in pregnancy is associated w...

Changing Roles of Matrix Metalloproteases and Their Inhibitors, TIMPs, During Tumor Progression and Angiogenesis

Inhibition of matrix-metalloproteinases (MMPs) by tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs) has been shown in vivo to decrease metastasis and tumor-associated angiogenesis. Our laboratory is interested in understanding the role of these proteins at the pericellular microenvironment of tumor and endothelial cells. Secretion of MMPs by tumor cells enables the migration, invasion and metasta...

The Direct and Indirect Effects of Gratitude and Optimism on the Marital Satisfaction

Objective: The major focus of present literature on marital satisfaction is about the processes that weaken it in couples. In contrast, positive factors that may contribute to the prosperity of couples’ relationships are less widely considered. Gratitude is one of the factors that its role and in particular, the pathways that associate it to marital satisfaction are not studied. The current stu...

Dendritic Cells in Transplant Tolerance

Dendritic cells (DCs) are a heterogeneous family of professional APCs involved in priming adaptive immune responses. Donor DCs (direct pathway of allorecognition) and recipient DCs presenting processed donor major histocompatibility complex (MHC) as peptides (indirect pathway of allorecognition) participate actively in graft rejection by stimulating recipient T cell responses following organ tr...

The Position of Implicit and Indirect Learning in Ethical Education

The rationalist approach has been dominated on the education environment of values for many years. Unilateral and excessive focus on this approach has revealed ignorance of a vast part of human implicit learning and his intuitive ethical judgments which have been the source of many ethical behaviors. The study intends to answer the question that why only direct and deductive educations about va...
